Watch the video

In this presentation we will look the history of Socrates, his main ideas, and the way in which they are close to the Bahá’í teachings. The main purpose is to show how many teachings of this Greek philosopher, whom Bahá’u’lláh refers to as “the most distinguished of all philosophers,” not only are at the origin of the values of Western culture, but also are “validated” by the Bahá’í Faith. The talk seeks to demonstrate to Bahá’ís that Socrates is worth knowing and studying.

Marco Oliveira is a Portuguese Bahá’í living in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born into a Catholic family and accepted the Faith in 1984. He is married, has two children, and works as a software engineer. He attended the “Religious Sciences” course at the Catholic University of Lisbon and is the author of the blog “Povo de Bahá” (People of Bahá). The deep study of Bahá’í themes and the study of scripture and theology have been his passions. In recent years he has devoted special attention to the study of Christian themes from a Bahá’í perspective.

I have always “known” personally that Socrates was indeed one of the “Lesser Prophets” sent at intellectually “dark” times to “Relight the Lamps of Understanding” for the Teachings of The Divine Messengers, past/present/future.

    1. I think it is useful to keep the categories of Prophet” and “philosopher” separate even if the overlap in terms of divine guidance. Ancient philosophers were much more “in tune” with the divine than modern, more secular philosophers.

  2. There is a world of difference between
Philosopher and a divine messenger of God .

    1. Messengers, yes, but not lesser prophets. Have you read Ezekiel?
